As the time is going on, people started losing hopes about free and fair judiciary to which they struggled in the lawyers’ movement. Media, which played vital role in restoration of judiciary, started revealing other side of the picture.
A recent report on a private TV channel claimed that the officials of the Supreme Court are taking extraordinary interest in the infamous memogate scandal, from the very beginning of the case.
In an unparallel move, the apex court distributed the copies of Mansoor Ijaz’s affidavit, one of the many respondents in the case, in the larger extent.
According to the report, Personal Staff Officer of the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Chaudhry Abdul Hameed personally dispersed the news items regarding Mansoor Ijaz’s affidavit, he submitted with the court.
He made telephone calls to selected journalists and media outlets before the court’s time, exceeding the legal boundaries of the rules and procedures. It is vital to mention here that Hussain Haqqani’s reply was not distributed by the court but his counsel,
Asma Jehangir.
The apex court issued the official statement on Mansoor Ijaz’s reply when many court reporters recorded their protest before the registrar office. However, the official press release did not mention source of the reply.
According to the report, the press statement quoted Ministry of Affairs, which is not really existed. Usually, the replies of foreigners come through diplomatic channel that was not practiced in this particular case.
Court reporters claimed that officials of the apex court went beyond their limits in dealing the memogate case. They said to have seen biasness in the apex court in the particular situation because it is about President Asif Ali Zardari.
Waheed Murad, a local court reporter stated, “The CJ’s Personal Staff Officer telephoned a few journalists, informing about the reply of Mansoor Ijaz before the court time”. He went on to say that the officials were showing extraordinary interests in the
memogate case, which made it suspicious.
Counsel of Hussain Haqqani, Asma Jehangir, speaking media after the short verdict, in which the apex court declared it maintainable, said Supreme Court gave the petitioners more than they had asked for.
