Japan stands up against the cyber attacks

Following frequent cyber attacks on the diplomatic mission of Japan and on the parliament in past few months, the Japanese government has asked the developers to come up with an appropriate solution. Reportedly, the work has been started to develop a cyber-weapon
to deal with the issue. Japanese experts are developing a virus that will track down the source of attack and will further neutralise its programme.

In October 2011, Japanese overseas diplomatic mission was hit by a virus “Backdoor Agent MOF”, which infected the computers at almost ten Japanese embassies and consulates. The virus was designed to send the hacked information to servers in China and it
was capable of transmitting user IDs and other information to some external terminal without permission from the authorised user.

In the same month, Japanese defence contractor Mitsubishi Heavy was hit by a host of mal-functioning programmes (viruses). More than 50 separate viruses in a series of cyber attacks were reported back then. Ironically, one of the infected computers contracted
28 types of virus. Some of the viruses were removed with the existing anti-viruses but most of them jammed the antivirus programmes and damaged the operating systems. It was a major concern for Japan as the defence information was prone to be breached.

Furthermore, the computers in Japan’s lower house of parliament were also hit by similar cyber-attacks from a server based in China. As a result, the lower house officials told lawmakers and parliamentary staff to change their network IDs and passwords,
over fears that security had been breached.

These cyber attacks and threats made Japanese government extra cautious about the whole matter and now they have decided to invest some $2.3 million (179 million yen) in the three year project, which will serve the sole purpose of providing cyber security
to Japanese network. The project has been assigned to one of the renowned technology makers, the Fujitsu Limited.

The government of Japan is hopeful that the new project will protect local networks from any potential threats and risks. Lets’ see if this new project serves the purpose for Japan.
