Shah Mahmood Qureshi says PTI yet to decide on possible coalition with Pervez Musharraf

The vice-chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Shah Mahmood Qureshi has caused uproar within the party supporters after stating that the decision regarding any future conciliation with the former president of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf will be taken
after taking circumstances into account.

“People from every political party are joining the PTI. PTI is neither a trend nor a fad today. It is an ideology to shake the status quo and will soon be the practical implementation of the dreams of the Pakistani people,” said Qureshi.

Musharraf, who does not enjoy a very good reputation among the masses in the country, was impeached by the parliament following the 2008 elections which brought Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) into power.

Since then, the former president has been residing in England, from where he is managing his political party All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) that he created in 2010. After staying out of the country for several years, Musharraf announced his plan to arrive
in Pakistan in January 2012.

PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), along with a majority of Pakistan population accuses Musharraf of having no regard for the constitution of Pakistan and the judiciary due to his actions during his tenure as the head of the country. The former
president is also accused of comprising the country’s sovereignty. The Lal Masjid incident has convinced many in the country that Musharraf has blood on his hands and led to demands for his trial.

PTI’s chairman Imran Khan has been quite vocal about his opposition of Musharraf and his policies. Despite getting an offer to become the prime minister from Musharraf in 2002, Khan had refused to form any sort of coalition with the latter.

The relations between Khan and Musharraf had never looked good in the 8 years and it seemed unlikely that the two would ever work alongside each other.

With Qureshi’s statement, people are beginning to think that the stance of PTI is weakening and they are getting desperate to come into power.

However, Qureshi states, “We [the PTI] are in no hurry to come into power. I pray that whoever comes in power in the future is loyal to Pakistan.”

PTI has been rallying great support from all corners of Pakistan and is being considered as the favourite for the 2013 elections. However, the party is bound to face numerous challenges down the road to elections and it would be up to the chairman and senior
leadership of the party to tackle them in the most effective and efficient way.
