Miramshah: (Tuesday, January 03, 2012) enraged with kidnapping of the office guard, the staff of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) decided to call off their month-long strike
yesterday and to give the government ten days for the recovery of their colleagues.
The NADRA staff in NWA had gone on strike to protest on the kidnapping of their security guard Asta Ali Khan. About a month ago, two unidentified gunmen kidnapped him from Dattakhel Road in Miranshah.
Asta Ali’s case is not the first one for which the employees in the agency had to call for a strike, earlier, another Nadra employee was kidnapped about four months back who is also yet to be recovered. There is only one Nadra
office in Miramshah for the entire North Waziristan tribal region. The tribal people were faced with a host of hardships due to the strike. They used to travel to Bannu for obtaining the computerised national identity cards.
The NWA chapter of the Tribal Union of Journalists (TUJ) played an active role in persuading the Nadra officials to call off their strike. TUJ president Syed Haleem and senior journalist Malik Mumtaz Khan held talks with the protesting
Nadra officials and Political Tehsildar Khanadan Khan and convinced them to call off the strike.
The Nadra officials agreed to open the office for 10 days to see what sort of efforts the political administration and the North Waziristan Peace Committee members make to recover the kidnapped employees.
Kidnappings of government employees and common citizens in North Waziristan have become a routine these days and the political administration has repeatedly failed to curb the problem. At a time when no government employee was
willing to work in a highly insecure area, NADRA’s employees set a rare example of courage by choosing to work in NWA which has long been a front line in the fight against militants.
If the government still remains failed to recover the kidnapped employees, the tall claims for setting its writ in the area will be left to hang in balance.
