What to expect of hacking in 2012 — Part 1
Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012 5:47:34 by Usman KhalidThe year 2011 was anything but secure in terms of internet security and what made it worse was the integration of the public sector organizations that regulate the utilities like water were exposed to the cloud without taking any prior precautions.
The corporate sector or the CIA being the target of the hacktivists has been normal news of late, but that being said, there was not much done in the security of companies like CitiGroup to avoid or shield against these attacks.
Last year, or the year three days back, was the Year of the Hackers. Egypt saw a massive attack on the internet, right in the midst of political crisis and succession of coups in overthrowing governments. The Google and Facebook pages were hacked just to
promulgate the message that the internet is not a secure platform and governments are always watching right down to the personal computer of some ABC in an XYZ street.
Moreover, a Russian website published a miles long list of users who downloaded files from P2P client software like uTorrent. These files were not only movies like The Forest Gump and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, but there was more audacity to the activity
done just to prove that the internet community is being watched.
Facebook got a tap on the head by Federal Trade Commission for the sloppy security protocols they had been using in securing the private data of the users. However, Mark Zuckerberg and company promised to not to repeat the same in the future.
CitiGroup’s data of its credit card customers got leaked by a group of hackers and along with their billing records were accompanying the credit card numbers. The bank had to go through a tough time to call the turmoil back to normal state.
However, this is a kind of activity that cannot be stopped or eradicated completely. There is more that can be expected in the future, more likely in 2012. The 2011 incidents opened water gates to more audacious and heinous activities that can be expected
to happen this year.
