Differences appeared to have emerged in the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) as various political parties Tuesday looked divided over the country’s role and association with the US in
terms of war on terrorism.
“Jamat-e-Islamai (JI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) have recommended that Pakistan should disassociate from war on terror while ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and its ally Awami National Party (ANP) termed it country’s
own war,” a participant of the committee told media.
The meeting of the PCNS was held in the Parliament House with Senator Raza Rabbani in the chair to review the draft of recommendations prepared by the committee’s secretariat for revising country’s foreign policy and Pakistan’s
role in war against terrorism.
The two anti-American religious-political parties, the JI and the JUI-F, want the government to pull out the war on terror. They were advocating for holding dialogues with militants instead of military operation.
The two factions of Pakistan Muslim League, PML-N and PML-Q had a slightly different view, recommending the continuance of Pakistan’s role in war on terror and assistance with the US and
NATO but with clear redlines in this regard, the participant of the meeting further informed.
The PML-N and PML-Q also demanded to stop the drones and other attacks on Pakistani soils being carried out from Afghanistan. Both the parties are supporting dialogue with Taliban.
Now it would be a tough job for Raza Rabbani to develop a consensus among the members of his committee, which has always come up with unanimous proposals over all national issues.
The committee is in process these days to finalize around 30 points recommendations about revising Pakistan’s foreign policy and its ties with the US and NATO regarding assistance in the war against terrorism.
Briefing to Media after the meeting, Senator Raza Rabbani said that draft of recommendations would be finalized with the consensus of all the members. He added that parliamentary committee was also keeping in view its earlier
resolutions and recommendations regarding national security.
Rabbani further said that Minister of Finance and his team could not attend the meeting due to ECC meeting and now they would brief the committee on Thursday about the country’s benefits and losses after joining the war on
terror.

The members of the infamous Establishment provide continuity for pursuit of national policy objectives. They are trained, educated and experienced in their respective fields. The virtues of integrity, professionalism and honesty imbibed throughout their careers are the strong points of their role and reasons of their effectiveness. They have no personal interests and no constituency to please at the cost of national interest. Contrary to that, the politicians who do not like the Establishment and use it as scapegoat for all their failures, are driven by self-interest and cannot look beyond their tenure in elected office. The matters of national interest and national security are as alien to them as the virtues of selflessness. Though they claim to be the guardians of national interest, given their capacity, can they be trusted with matters as serious as national security and national security, particularly when these matters do not promise any kickbacks?
