The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday issued Show Cause notices to a number of Pakistan People’s Party leaders in the contempt of court case by holding a press conference against SC’s initial hearing on December 1.
The PPP leaders who have been issued notices today include the vice president of ruling party Senator Babar Awan, Federal information minister Firdous Ashiq Awan, Farooq Awan, Khursheed Shah and former federal mister for information and broadcasting Qamar
Zaman Kaira.
The PPP leaders who been issued show cause notices by the apex court of the country had all held a press conference at the Press Information Department on December 1 condemning Court’s decision to hold a hearing on the contentious Memogate scandal embroiling
the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari. In the press conference the PPP leaders rejected the formation of a commission to probe into the memo issue on the directions of Supreme Court.
“We respect the courts but the verdict to constitute a commission to probe the memo issue was given without hearing the federation of Pakistan and giving notice to it. Nawaz Sharif wants confrontation among institutions,” Senator Babar Awan had said during
that conference adding that only an executive could create such a commission.
During the press conference, the information minister Dr Firdous had criticised the SC staff for giving PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif – the leading petitioner in the memo case – a VIP protocol at the court by allowing him and his companions enter the premises
of court without invitation cards.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Chaudhry Iftikhar Hussain had taken the notice of the aggressive press conference held to denounce court’s order and termed it contemptuous.
Last month the Chief Justice had directed the Registrar to put up in his chamber the replies of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani for an order on holding of press conference by Dr Babar Awan and other ministers. In today’s proceedings, the Attorney General
of Pakistan read out the statement by PM in response to the controversial conference.
The court has summoned the PPP leaders on January 13.
