War Horse – a highly recommended watch

Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is a 2011 drama flick which was released on December 25^th in the United States. It is based on War Horse, a children’s novel set before and during World War I, written by a British author Michael Morpurgo.

The $66 million budgeted movie centres on Albert Narracott (starred by Jeremy Irvine) who joins to service in WWI after his beloved horse, Joey, is sold to the cavalry. Albert’s hopeful journey takes him out of England and across Europe as the war rages
on.

The 146 minutes movie received wide critical acclaim for some sensational performances from the ensemble cast. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 77 percent of critics gave him a positive reviews based on reviews by 152 critics. The site’s general
consensus states, “Technically superb, proudly sentimental, and unabashedly old-fashioned, War Horse is an emotional drama that tugs the heartstrings with Spielberg’s customary flair.”

Andrew O’Hehir of the Salon.com declared, “It’s almost a great war movie in one direction, and almost a piece of irredeemable cheese in the other, and there you have it.”

Tony Medley of the Tolucan Times gave it a score of 8 out of 10 and said, “Even though it’s long and the premise is fantasy, it is extremely well made, the acting is superb, as are the war scenes.”

However, NPR’s top film critic, Ian Buckwalter, gave it a score of 5.5 out of 10 and stated, “It’s not that a film can’t be lighthearted family fare, a gritty war epic and a weepie all at once; the problem is that here, those elements feel strictly compartmentalized
— and calculated.”

War Horse is mostly recommended by many critics and its performance at the box office is a proof that well made films work with the audience.
