Senate body for dialogue with Taliban

The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs urged the government to hold dialogues with the Taliban, terming it only solution to bring back the peace in the region.

“Why not we go for dialogue (with Taliban) if Americans opt to go the same way after war of ten years,” Chairman of the Committee Salim Saifullah told media after meeting of his panel in Parliament House Thursday.

He went on to say the government should use all means including dialogue with all extremist and militant groups for bringing them on table for talks.

The committee observed that force only be used as a last resort to curb the militancy and other option be exploited for bringing the normalcy in the troubled region of.

Welcoming the opening of Taliban’s political office in Qatar, the parliamentarians suggested that all the concern parties be included in fresh round of negotiations on Afghanistan.   

Commenting on the Pak-Afghan relations, the chairman said that both the countries should have developed cordial ties with neighbouring countries in order to re-establish peace in the region.

He also stated that murder of former Afghan president Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani had caused severe damage to bilateral relations. “Both sides have to be very careful in mutual issues as any negative incident affects on regional security,” he warned.  
 

He recommended that a high-level parliamentary delegation, presided by the National Assembly speaker and the Senate chairman should visit Afghanistan for good relations with the country, adding that good ties were vital for peace in the entire region.

Speaking on the bilateral ties between India and Pakistan, the committee chairman said besides making good relations with India, Kashmir issue must remain on priority in negotiations and the country would have to consider the feelings of the native people
and about the sovereignty of the country.

He warned that any further war adventure would ruin both the countries. “The governments of both sides must focus on prosperity of the poor and depressed people,” he maintained.  

To a query, the committee chairman stated that the ties with the U.S. will be reviewed in light of the recommendations set by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS).

The panel will submit its recommendations with Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani who will submit in the joint sitting of parliament.
