A year has been passed away since former Punjab Governor Salman Taseer was killed by his own bodyguard on blasphemous charges, who was deputed to protect him. The death shook up the country but what was the bequest he had left in the rear?
Has the incumbent, self-confessed liberal government, take any step about the misuses of blasphemy laws?
Has there been a significant debate organized to discuss the punishments for those who used the law for their personal benefits. Has there any attempt made to develop a tolerating culture that is essence of the Islam.
Unfortunately, there will be no positive answers of the above mentioned queries. There has been nothing changed thus far rather things have grown worsened. Since the murder of Salman Taseerm, no one dare to break the silence over the blasphemy laws.
On the other hand, the killer, Mumtaz Qadri has been garlanding as he comes for his hearing. The judge, who has awarded him a death sentence, had to leave the country over death-threats.
Some reports also reported in the media that the PPP-associated cleric, who offered the funeral prayer of Taseer, also flee the country in order to save him. On the other hand, according to the reports Shahbaz Taseer, the son of killed Salman Taseer, has
been allegedly abducted by militants.
Some believe that he may use him as a bargaining tool in case Mumtaz Qadri loses his appeal against the death sentence.
It is still unclear how Qadri managed to able to have him deployed in protecting squad of Salman Taseer. What was the role of other Elite personal performing duty along with Qadri to shield the governor?
The findings of the investigations, if it has been done, have not been opened. Many questions are unanswered up till now. The need of the hour is to go for a serious debate what is really we required to create religious harmony among the masses.
The apathy is really terrifying in many ways since the death of Salman Taseer. The killed governor is no more to fight back, but the controversies should be resolved in the larger interest of the country as well as religion.
