Barak Obama’s Demilitarisation stance and US Economy
Saturday, January 7th, 2012 5:06:20 by Sharjeel AhmadAfter pursuing an offensive foreign policy for at least four years, the American President, Barak Obama, seems to have read the ground realities well towards the end of his tenure. His recent stance to pull out troops from Iraq and Afghanistan is evident
of the fact that he wants to market America as a peace loving and friendly nation across the globe, and restore the world’s oldest democracy’s image which has been tarnished badly by the controversial ‘war on terror’.
But this diplomatic change has not come over nightly, it is a result of the countrywide protests triggered by continuous economic recession and financial crisis which have brought the unemployed youth on roads. During 2011, the ‘Occupy Wall Street Movement’,
which is formed of the activists who want drastic changes in the economic policies to relieve the nation from crises, got intensified.
Apart from the global financial crunch, the overwhelming spending on the overseas military ventures played a big part in ruining the American economy and causing mass level downsizing across the nation.
After a decade of the fruitless and pointless war, the American youth has come to realise that their leaders are spending the public taxes erroneously. There is found sheer antipathy in the country against the military expenses which are hiking with every
passing month.
Obama, who came to power with the slogan of ‘CHANGE’ has failed badly to come up to his voters’ expectations, and he knows this fact well. Now, as the next presidential elections are drawing near, he has resorted to Demilitarisation and focus on economic
reforms. Though he is facing severe opposition from some conservative circles of the States, but he is not going to succumb to the pressure this time.
Having withdrawn the forces from Iraq, Obama has indicated to end the notorious war on Afghanistan zone as well. He has advanced a hand of friendship towards the Afghani Talibans who, after years of fight, are still intact and willing to perpetuate the war.
But the US president feels that there will be no use of this war whether it continues for a decade more.
If America shuns the aggressive policies and starts living as a peaceful state in the comity of world, its economy will perk up within a couple of years. Moreover, this step will have positive repercussions on the global market as well.
However, Obama’s vision does not seem to see light of the day as his chances to win the next elections are fewer. The next president, probably form Liberals wing, is not likely to carry forward the non-violence foreign policy initiated by the incumbent White
House leader.
