Local Chitrali youth invents “Avalanche Detector” based on the principle of Resonance
Local Chitrali youth Mohammad Khalid, a Masters degree holder in Electronics from the University of Peshawar, has come up with his latest invention, “Avalanche Detector”, a device which can pre-empt the deadly Avalanches in the region. The electronic device
will provide forewarnings about the Avalanches which have been the cause of widespread destruction.
The mountainous regions of Chitral, Gilgit-Baltistan and several other adjoining areas have suffered and continue to suffer colossal damages in terms of human life and property as there has been no viable method of determining the cause of Avalanches.
Avalanches are sweeping River of ice and snow which can be caused by any disturbance in the surroundings. Piled up snow on mountains grow in weight and slight movement or raging snow blizzards can trigger a massive flow of ice which often wipe out whole
villages and their inhabitants in a blink of an eye. Most of the survivors or bodies cannot be recovered as they are buried under tons of snow which quickly hardens to restrict any evacuation operation.
“It will help to minimize the devastation caused by avalanches,” said Mohammad Khalid. “The machine can preempt movement of an avalanche within a radius of one kilometre. It will also help to remove the potential danger of floods caused by avalanches and
glacier outbursts,” he claimed.
Describing his invention, which is just a prototype for the moment, Khalid told NewsPakistan that the device worked on the principle of “Resonance” and is set into motion with respective frequencies generated by the movement of heavy ice sheets. He claimed
that the device has been put through many phases of testing and scrutiny and that it works equally well in rain and snowfall.
Khalid also cited examples of the wide scale destruction in the villages of Sonughur, Booni and Washich in the upper parts of the district. He recalled the massive Avalanche which destroyed the Washich village in 2005 causing a loss of 60 precious lives
in a matter of seconds.
Khalid also said that the system was fully automatic and powered by a 12 volts rechargeable battery. The battery is charged by a panel of solar cells. The machine has two antennas, standing waves generators, frequency generator and automatic reset.
Khalid has named the device as “Glacier Abstain System” and he had to incur a cost of Rs10, 000. The commercial version of the device will cost around Rs50,000 and he also pleaded support from the concerned masses of the society to help him with his endeavors.
