PPP versus Supreme Court: Final Round

The PPP that is famous for having confrontation in its blood essayed that the party was moving once again for a battle against judiciary, the unbending state organ of the country. The core committee of the party decided not to act accordingly, fixing the
guns on the apex court.

Regardless of unequivocal orders by the Supreme Court about writing a letter to Swiss authorities for reopening of corruption cases, the incumbent decided not to implement at any cost. The clear-cut rejection is obviously presenting the situation what is
going to happen in the coming days.

The matter is not as simpler as it looks. A meeting of the PPP’s core committee was held with President Asif Ali Zardari in the chair, who is also co-chairman of the party. Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, the chief executive of the country, was also
attended the party’s sitting showing they all are on a same page.

It is quite an inconceivable decision and contradicts claims made by the government that it not only reinstated the detained judges but also respect the courts.

Despite the incumbent has followed a completely opposed position, its leaders did not make any claims about non implementation of courts’ verdicts.

The confrontation between judiciary and the executive is appeared at a peak when the government as well as state is being faced by a large number of internal and external problems. The need of the hour is to make efforts for reconciliation, harmony and stability,
but it is not happening so.

In the present scenario, apparently the PPP wanted to become a political martyr, as many of its acts proved its intentions in doing so.

Moreover, the executive body of the PPP also stayed firm on the decision that President Asif Ali Zardari would not submit any reply in the apex court on the controversial memogate scandal.

The Supreme Court, despite showing patience for long time, issued contempt of court notices to five PPP stalwarts including federal ministers.

Babar Awan, who capitalizes every chance to ridicule the superior judiciary, was served two notices with the inclination of passing derogatory remarks for the apex court.

What is a big harm in dispatching a letter to Swiss authorities when the party itself has been claiming that there was no substance in the cases?

The PPP-led government should re-evaluate its policy of confrontation, as it will not in the larger interests of the country.
