The Thing (1982) – a horror classic, a must see

What made the 1982 Kurt Russell horror movie The Thing an instant classic and a part of popular culture

Kurt Russell may not be known for many things apart from the iconic Escape from
movies which cast him in the role of Snake. Yet, the same actor gave what could very well be one of his best performances in John Carpenters classic.

Since the release of The Thing 2011, which is a prequel to the original, there has been increased interest in the film that, if was human, is old enough to have children.

While the latest movie may be catered more towards the audience of today, the original will not disappoint any horror enthusiast who braves it.

The film explores a new, or rather what used to be a new, kind of horror. One that depends less on cheap scares but more on the pyschological aspect. It builds up tension and paranoia while at the same time exploring the phenomenon of cabin fever.

In essence, the movie is about a team of scientists in a remote camp just before winter is about to set in. Early on in the film they discover a creature that transforms into anything it ‘absorbs’.

Before anyone knows it, all the members of the science team are ready to rip each other limb from limb as they wonder just who the alien could have taken the form of.

It may sound cliched, but this was where the genre pretty much took birth from. There is plenty of graphic imagery as well, for those who do not a bit of blood and guts to go with their taste for horror.

Malformed aliens, decapitations and some rather creepy imagery of heads growing legs and walking on their own, yes you read that right, are all included.

To sum it up, if one has an hour and a half on their hands and wishes to enjoy a classic, that is still relevant today, John Carpenters The Thing is a must watch.
