2012 brings more challenges to the technology world – Part 2
Monday, January 9th, 2012 6:48:05 by Usman KhalidThe main drawback of Google’s Android OS is its open-sourced nature of business. To date, anyone can do anything to the OS according to its will. HTC has it’s Sense skin and many others have theirs to give a unique look to the same operating system on their handsets. But what they end up with is a messed up source code that has sloppy set of keys and other features.
That is the main reason why Google could not make its operating system a standard as compared to Apple’s iOS. Whenever the company releases an update to the new OS version, they have to test it on every piece of hardware that runs it and that literally is every other company albeit Apple.
The ordeal is followed by applications. Due to the open-sourced nature, there are many third-party applications available on the internet, that are uninstallable in the first place and if the user somehow stuffs an oval into a circular hole, it drains the battery very quickly.
Google needs to take some drastic steps in order to make the Android system a standard because companies like Amazon and soon-to-enter Facebook will take advantage of the faux pas and make it their own with major tweaks.
2012 will be a crucial year for Microsoft in mobile technology. The company, no doubt, reins in the personal computing segment but the mobile computing is getting out of their stride. Microsoft were the pioneers of smartphones and tablet PC but the advent of iPhone has completely change the picture.
MS’ new venture of plunging into the contemporary tablet world with Windows 8 might be big step but it may also result in serious repercussions. Bill Gates envisaged the smartphones to be the next CPUs, with a monitor and keyboard attached to it, but the company was hesitant in taking such step as it would potentially cannibalize the Windows desktop operating system.
However, creating a hybrid of PC and a tablet might not result in success. Only 2012 progress will show what is true and what is false.
