Google accused over violating anti-spam campaign

The world renowned search engine, Google, is again facing some accusation and this time for breaking its own rules and regulations. Google has been criticised of breaking its own anti-spam
rules because they are sponsoring hundreds of blog postings that attempt to promote its web browser, Google Chrome.

These postings contain reviews about the browser, which say that it is useful in small businesses. Such reviews show that the promotion is undoubtedly sponsored by Google. The postings
also include Google sponsored links that help promoting the search term, Google Chrome, in the site’s search outcomes.

Such actions to promote its software are against the rules and regulations about using spam to manipulate the rankings. On the other hand, the search engine company has cleared that the
fault lay with Essence Digital, a media buying firm, which was employed by Google.

Essence Digital said in a statement, “We want to be perfectly clear here: Google never approved a sponsored-post campaign. They only agreed to buy online video ads. Google have consistently
avoided paid postings to promote their products, because in their view these kind of promotions are not transparent or in the best interests of users.”

They added, “In this case, Google were subjected to this activity through media that encouraged bloggers to create what appeared to be paid posts, were often of poor quality and out of
line with Google standards. We apologize to Google who clearly didn’t authorize this.”

A search engine expert and writer, Danny Sullivan, who writes on Search Engine Land blog, said that Google is paying to produce a lot of garbage, as the postings promoting the browser
contain identical text that can be applied to any web browser.

Meanwhile, Google explained that the search algorithm, PageRank, ignores such material. However, the sponsored links are not against the rules, but they combine with the auto-generated
content, Google’s search algorithm pays attention to them and they are penalised.
