NRO decision causes stir in the Pakistani parliamentary ranks

Supreme Court’s decision against the National Reconciliation Order has prompted fear and chaos in the parliamentary ranks in Pakistan. The decision which was announced on 10th of January, 2011 has compelled the sitting
government to review their priorities as a few days earlier, President Zardari categorically stated that the NRO cases were history for the Pakistan Peoples’ Party.

It remains to be seen whether PPP’s parliamentary allies will stand with the government in their staunch stance which has been further complicated by Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani’s remarks against the Pakistan Army’s interference
in domestic politics.

With the Supreme Court decision awaiting implementation, opposition parties such as PML-N have also been thrown into action as the Interior Minister Rehman Malik exposed Mian Nawaz Shareef’s agreement with former President as well
as the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf as a part of NRO.

Parties who have escaped the wrath of the Supreme Court decision have gained confidence as a result of the decision and now have stepped up their pressure on the government to hold early elections in March or April in 2012. Amidst
all of this chaos, the situation for the common man in Pakistan has deteriorated.

Availability of gas for domestic as well as industrial usage still remains a bone of contention in the country whilst CNG shortage has also affected the economy in general. Furthermore, load shedding of electricity has also added
fuel to the fire as people have had trouble in their domestic households across the country.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has already warned that strict steps will be taken by the court which is responsible for upholding the land of the law in Pakistan if the parliamentarians fail to take action as per the judicial decision
of 10th of January 2012.
