Islamabad: (Tuesday, January 10, 2012) Pakistan has lately emerged among the deadliest countries for the journalists, and with each passing day, the government along with security agencies has failed to provide them reliable protection.
Infect the later has been accused of killing many of the renowned journalists of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Today, when this issue was raised in the Parliament and it was highlighted that many of the journalists were still receiving threats from unidentifiable sources, the National Assembly decided to form a committee to investigate
into the issue.
Deliberating on the issue, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal was unanimously electedas the first chairman of the special committee for Protection of Journalists.
In the meeting held today, it was Pakistan Peoples Party leader Nazar Mohammad Gondal who initiated with the issue and proposed Ahsan Iqbal’s name as committee chairman. The proposal was favoured and endorsed by other prominent
political leaders like Nawab Yousuf Talpur and others.
Among others the meeting for the protection of journalists was attended by Dr. Attiya Innayatullah, Ahsan Iqbal, Engr Khurram Dastgir, Nawab Muhammad Yousaf Talpur, Nazar Mohammad Gondal, and Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi.
The committee decided to hold its next meeting on January 18 to finalize ‘Terms of References in consultation with all stakeholders.
The issue regarding providing protection to the journalists was taken up by Human Rights Commission of Pakistan first yesterday that expressed its concern over reports on threats received by a number of journalists and had asked
the authorities to ensure that threats to journalists end.
