The Supreme Court of Pakistan has recently issued a warning to the Prime Minister of the country Yousuf Raza Gilani concerning the initiation of the Swiss probe that would investigate corruption charges made against the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has clearly said that it holds the option of relieving the Prime Minister of the country of his duties in the event that he fails to comply with the demand of the Supreme Court to start the investigation.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has been asking the government of the country ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party to ask the Swiss probe to resume their investigation in which President Asif Ali Zardari has been charged with being involved in money laundering.
The case not only named Zardari, it also had the name of Benazir Bhutto as being party to the crime. Both Bhutto as well as Zardari were found guilty in absentia in the year 2003 in a court in Geneva. However, Asif Ali Zardari has directly stated that his
government will not take such a step.
The Swiss probe investigation had come to a halt after the National Reconciliation Ordinance was signed during the time Gen (retd.) Parvez Musharraf was the President of Pakistan. However, the apex court of the country deemed the NRO as illegal, therefore,
the current President of Pakistan stands to be investigated again.
The ruling that has warned the Prime Minister of Pakistan consisted of a panel of five judges who have stated that the government of the country is indulging in "wilful disobedience". Currently, the attorney general has been ordered by the Supreme Court
of Pakistan to make an appearance next week and explain the position of the government of Pakistan along with its slow response to the orders of the Supreme Court of the country.
Babar Awan, who is a lawmaker of the government of Pakistan, expressed himself on the matter in the following words: "Only the people of Pakistan have the right to decide who is popular and who is unpopular in the country, and who is honest and who is dishonest."
