Studies of researchers from Cambridge and Leicester Universities have revealed that a mother having an unhealthy diet during her pregnancy is creating problems for her unborn baby. According
to the research, a bad diet during pregnancy gives rise to the risk for the unborn child to develop diabetes in later life.
The research suggested that the increase in diabetes risk is due to the reduction of child’s ability to store fat. The body cannot store fats due to a poor nutrition during pregnancy.
The body becomes weak and less equipped to hold fats in the correct parts.
Once not stored in the correct body parts, these fats can build up in places where they can cause harm to the liver and muscle. Thus the fats increase the diabetes and other age-related
diseases’ risk in later stages of life.
The current research can help experts determine the people who are at the highest risk of developing these conditions and design treatments for them.
One of the researchers, Prof Anne Willis said to the media, “One of the ways that our bodies cope with a rich modern western diet is by storing excess calories in fat cells.”
She added, “When these cells aren’t able to absorb the excess then fats get deposited in other places, like the liver, where they are much more dangerous and can lead to type 2 diabetes.”
The new research that was published in the Cell Death and Differentiation journal, has found out that the people who had been indulged in eating a bad diet while having a baby in their
womb are more likely to have higher levels of a molecule in their body called mir-483-3p.
These researches conducted research on the rats and came to know that the rats with low-protein diet feeding during pregnancy gave birth to offspring with high levels of the molecule.
They also developed smaller fat cells that were less able to store fat once fully grown.
On the other hand, the rats which were fed a high-calorie diet gave birth to the offspring which showed symptoms to gain excessive weight, but were more likely to develop diabetes.
