Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: an epic adaptation

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a British thriller which was released at the Venice Film Festival on September 5th, 2011. It is directed by Tomas Alfredson and produced by Tim Bevan, Erlic Fellner and Robyn Slovo.

The 127 minutes movie is based on the 1974 novel with a similar name, by John le Carre. The film features Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Toby Jones, Mark Strong and Ciaran Hinds.

Distributed by Studio Canal, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is set in London at the height of the Cold War years of the mid-20th Century. Espionage veteran George Smiley (starred by Oldman) is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within
MI-6, British Secret Intelligence Service.

The $21 million project was initiated by Peter Morgan when he offered the draft of the screenplay to Working Title Films to produce. Morgan pulled out due to personal reason and Peter Straughan and Bridget O’Connor was hired to redraft the script.

The movie grossed $35.7 million at the box office and topped the British box office chart for three weeks. In addition to this, It received generally favourable and positive reviews from critics worldwide.

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a Certified Fresh rating and an average score of 7.8 out of 10 from 167 reviews. The site’s general consensus declared, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a dense puzzle of anxiety, paranoia, and espionage that
director Tomas Alfredson pieces together with utmost skill.”

Tom Long of the Detroit News gave it a rating of A- and said, “Ultimately, though, it is very much Oldman’s film, thanks to a restrained tour de force performance. Smiley is weathered, worn and beaten down by life, but he’s also a quiet, sure force of something
that resembles good.”

Toronto’s Star’s film critic, Peter Howell, gave the movie a score of 3.5 out of 4 and stated, “A movie of chain smokers and whisperers, of grey skies and glum expressions, of rattling tea cups and rotary-dialled telephones.”

All in all, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a great adaptation of its novel. You’d love to watch it with your family and friends.
