Quetta: (Tuesday, January 10, 2012) Convener President Emergency Action Plan for Polio Eradication, Dr. Azra Afzal Pechuho has said that efforts are made to make Balochistan a polio free province.
While chairing a meeting to review the polio eradication campaign in the province yesterday, she said that new initiatives to combat polio menace were yielding positive results.
During last few years, along with tribal belt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and interior Sindh, several polio cases from Balochistan were reported. Although there had been polio campaigns throughout the country, but due to security reasons,
many of the areas in Balochistan remained unreachable for the polio vaccination teams, and thus the virus of the illness could not be eliminated from the country.
Now, in order to make polio eradication efforts more effective, the government has launched a new campaign involving the deputy commissioners of the districts and tribal and social leaders of the various areas.
Despite the prevailing security concerns, it was told in the meeting that the polio vaccination campaigns in Qila Abdullah, Pishin, Naseerabad, Jaffarabad and Quetta remained successful.
Addressing the meeting, Dr. Azra express her content with the pace and success of campaign, albeit she highlighted the fact that Balochistan had vast area which needed special attention and hand work to be covered.
Considering pace of work and the results produced by the polio campaigns in the province, she said the day was not far when Balochistan will be turned into a polio free Province. Provincial minister for Information Technology and
Polio Eradication Shama perveen Magsi also marked her presence on the occasion.
