Parliamentary Committee to summon Hussain Haqqani, Pasha

Apparently, the memogate saga is going worsen with every passing day. Both the judicial commission constituted by the Supreme Court and the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) are probing the issue alongside.

The parliamentary panel will formally issue summons Tuesday to DG ISI Lt. Gen. Shuja Pasha and Hussain Haqqani for appearing before the committee to explain their positions about the inglorious memo scam.

The PCNS will also summon Mansoor Ijaz, a Pakistani-origin US business tycoon and main character behind the memo issue, through foreign office to brief the parliamentarians about his claims against Hussain Haqqani.

It is vital to mention here that Mansoor Ijaz, in security of the army, is reportedly coming to Pakistan on January 16, to appear before the Judicial Commission.

Earlier in its meeting on December 30 last year, the committee had officially decided to summon former Ambassador to the U.S.  Hussain Haqqani, DG ISI Lt. Gen. Shuja Ahmed Pasha and to invite Ijaz for probe.

A member of the committee reportedly said that it was yet to decide that how Mansoor Aijaz could be summoned. However, they all showed consent in use of diplomatic channel (Foreign Office) to call him to the PCNS.

He further briefed the media that the committee secretariat would issue simple notices to Hussain Haqqani and Gen. Pasha. Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani might also be summoned at any stage during the process, it was too reported.

Chairman PCNS Senator Raza Rabbani made it clear that his panel had authorized to summon anybody if it deems necessary.

Rabbani was of the view that they had nothing to do with the proceedings of the Supreme Court and the judicial commission and his panel would continue to probe the matters.

It seems that the findings of the parallel bodies will create severe problem. President Asif Ali Zardari, in his recent interview to Geo News, made it clear that he will accept the findings of Parliamentary Committee rather the commission formed by the apex court.
