The main trade union filmmakers of America (DGA, Directors’ Guild of America) has announced on Monday the nominations for its annual awards , which are usually considered as a first clue to the filmmakers who will be at the Kodak Theatre Los Angeles ahead
of the Oscars,. The DGA has chosen his quintet of directors like Woody Allen or David Fincher, but has excluded Steven Spielberg and Terrence Malick.
The director ( Spielberg) has attracted significant recent awards nominations with feature film such as The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse, which he directs and produces, but this time was outside the jurisdiction which includes other candidates as important
as Terrence Malick (The tree of life)
Despite omission, Spielberg has been one of the most renowned directors of the union. In 1985 he collected his first award for Best Director for The Color Purple. In 1993 he was recognized for his work in Schindler’s List and in 1998, he repeated the triumph
for his direction of the film Saving Private Ryan.
Terrence Malick with "The Tree of Life ‘ was also omitted from the nomination.
The movie ‘Midnight in Paris’ by Woody Allen, which hit the theaters last May 2011, revived in the race for the Grand Prix with the nomination for its director. The film was released in Cannes , and had since lost some steam, overshadowed by the latest releases.
The other nominated in the race is David Fincher for his thriller starring, Daniel Craig – The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, along with Michael Hazanavicius silent feature, The Artist. Alexander Payne has also in the run in with his drama, The Descendants.
Last year, it was The King’s speech director Tom Hopper who took the major honors with his movie going on to win the Oscar as well. The guild will be announced next Saturday January 28th.
