Super 8 – A must watch for Sci-fi lovers

Directed and written by J.J. Abrams, Super 8 is a science fiction thriller which was released in summer 2011. It is produced by Steven Spielberg and stars an ensemble cast of Joel Coutney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Amanda Michalka
and Ron Eldard.

The 112 minutes movie is set in 1979 and centres on group of youngsters who are filming their own Super 8 movie in a small town. They witness a catastrophic train crash while making the film and soon realises it was not an accident. After the incident, things
start disappearing from the town and the local deputy tries to uncover the truth.

The movie had a production budget of $50 million. It opened in 3,379 theatres and grossed over $35.4 million on its opening weekend, ranking at number one in the box office. It grossed $127 million in North America with a worldwide total of some $260 million.

The soundtrack for the film was composed by Michael Giacchino. The film was initially reported to be either a sequel or prequel to the 2008 film Clioverfield, but this was quickly denied by Abrams.

The film received generally favourable reviews with review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 82 percent of 254 critics gave it a positive review, with an average rating of 7.4 out of 10. The site’s general consensus states, “It may evoke memories
of classic summer blockbusters a little too eagerly for some, but Super 8 has thrills, visual dazzle, and emotional depth to spare.”    

Detroit News’ top film critic, Tom Long gave it a score of A- and declared, “Remember the good old days? This is the movie you went to see on a Saturday afternoon in the good old days.”

James Berardinelli of the ReelViews gave it a score of 3.5 out of 4 and said, “Abrams remembers the simple rule that a majority of his contemporaries have forgotten: action and mayhem have meaning only when an audience cares about the people trapped within
the maelstrom.”

‘Super 8’ is an interesting science fiction movie and a great way to kill time with your friends and family.
