Dell came late in the ultrabook segment but it started off to a good start. The Consumer Electronic Show, 2012 was the opportunity the company was looking for. On the second day of the event Dell introduced the first of its super-thin laptops, the XPS-13.

The powerful brand, XPS, attached to the name gives extra glamour to this new device. So far, the XPS has been the line of notebooks targeted at the IT experts, developers and other professionals for intensive use of applications.

The new device comes as a 13-inch model, obvious from the name XPS-13. However, the company claimed that the gadgetry has been stuffed into a 12-inch chassis, which is becoming a trend of late as many companies are towing the same line. However, the screen remains of the size 13-inch, diagonally.

The shape of the new device is an upgrade as compared to other laptops from Dell. The super-slim notebook is a uni-body structure made of glass and carbon fibre, which gives it a very solid feel, in addition to good looks.

The keyboard is not cramped up, given the fact that it is nestled inside a 12-inch frame. The separate keys work superbly with big-digit hands and every key is within reach. The whole set of buttons is backlit with a separate LED behind every key, which gives an attractive look to the device in the dark.

There are normal USB 3.0 and HDMI ports on either side accompanied by an SD card slot and Ethernet port for networking. There is no optical drive however; the typical trait of an ultrabook. However, this trend has recently been changed by Acer, who introduced their new ultra-thin laptop with a DVD drive inside.

The trackpad is also an upgrade; it is a bit wider than its siblings and more sensitive to touch. Moreover, the multi-gesture functions work exceptionally good as compared to other players in the market. However, the efficiency still lags behind the benchmark set by Apple in its flagship ultrabook called the Macbook Air.
