Dell launches its first ultrabook XPS-13 at the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show – Part 2
Wednesday, January 11th, 2012 4:45:52 by Usman KhalidThe XPS-13 has not embraced Intel’s new line of Ivy Bridge chips, designed for mobile devices and ultrabooks. Therefore, the company was a little hesitant in taking the name ‘Ultrabook’ at the event. However, all things considered, the device did fall in the category of extremely thin laptops.
Inside the cover is a Core i7 dual-core processor although the clock speed was not mentioned. With a solid state hard drive ranging from 128 GB to 256 GB, the device concludes there are no moving parts, whatsoever, in it. The XPS-13 comes with pre-installed Windows 7 Professional in it as its operating system.
The dimensions of the computer are not mesmerizing though, they surely help the device to fall under the category of ultrabooks. XPS-13 is 6mmx18mm in size and weighs only 2.99 pounds, according to Dell. The uni-body structure gives the laptop a very unique and flamboyant edge in the market that is already saturated with slim notebooks.
The specifications and the brand name however, remain the major selling point of the device. XPS has been one of the hot favourite brands for programmers and developers because of fast and efficient performance. The processor and chipset inside this device with a dedicated graphics card do not let the brand name down.
This new device will be available to the customers in early 2012, unlike other companies, who have lined-up their ultrabooks for latter part of the year. However, the most amazing feature of this new device is its price. Despite the quick and efficient processor and carbon fibre body, Dell has managed its price under a $1000 cap. However, the final retail price will available near its launch.
