Ultrabooks: A vanishing concept with the introduction of new laptops – Part 1
Wednesday, January 11th, 2012 3:10:14 by Usman KhalidA year ago no one had heard of the name ‘Ultrabook’ in the world of technology; even tech experts were oblivious of the terminology. There was no mention of this term in the Consumer Electronic Show, 2011. However, this technology has evolved to such an extent in just one year that the 2012 edition of CES is completely dedicated to this very concept.
Just a year ago only Apple was in the market with an ultrabook called the Macbook Air, which was thin, lightweight and had no optical drive. It was fast to go to sleep and even faster to boot and sported a long 7 to 9 hours of battery life.
However, during the last 6 odd months this concept has evolved and many companies have plunged into this metamorphosing segment. At the CES this year, almost every company was showcasing their new laptops that even remotely fell into the aforesaid category. Intel was the main actor on stage in introducing its products.
The company launched a number of ultrabook components from processors to chipsets to dedicated graphics. In addition, Intel made partnerships with several technology companies like Samsung, Dell and HP, for future ultrabooks. The main reason for such a rush into this category is to break down Apple’s monopoly in the market. The Macbook Air still remains the best selling super-slim laptop.
It is good to see a major change in the laptop design but the ultrabook concept brought a lot on the table, which has been lost in a rush. The very definition of this notion has changed or even worse, lost.
A few months ago, the ultrabook could be defined as a super-thin 11-inch or 13-inch portable device that had a dedicated keyboard and trackpad. It would be slim, lightweight and would consume less battery due to a power-efficient processor and chipset. All facts considered, it would be a super-portable device in the hands of the users, on the go
