Ultrabooks: A vanishing concept with the introduction of new laptops – Part 2
Wednesday, January 11th, 2012 3:10:04 by Usman KhalidNow, the picture is totally different. With the involvement of different actors in this segment, the concept of ultrabooks does not remain the same. Worst case scenario is that the very term will be lost in the crowd of different slim notebooks coming to the market this year.
Now-a-days, an ultrabook can vary from 11-, 13-, 14- to 15-inch models. At first glance, the new advancement looks welcoming. However; the 14- and 15-inch models are neither lightweight nor slim as compared to the 11- and 13-inch models that set the trend of the super-slim notebooks.
The contemporary version might incorporate an optical drive and a dedicated graphics card, which would compromise both size and battery life; two of the most powerful selling points of these devices.
Although the new line of notebooks is becoming thinner but the repetitive use of the term ultrabooks with normal laptops is blurring the line between the two categories. A laptop, XPS-13, launched at the CES 2012, is basically a professional machine but its association with the concept of ultrabooks because of mere slimness is an over exaggerated move. Some more laptops from other companies on the same line, and the term will be lost in the oblivion, forever.
For better understanding, and above all for strong branding, the two concepts should be kept separate. The ultrabooks should be marketed separately from the professional laptop genre.
Same case happened with smartphones and normal Java-based handsets. Nokia’s Symbian OS-based cell phone is considered a smartphone same as an Android or iOS-based handhelds.
In other news, Intel launched its first smartphone named Lenovo K800. The main emphasis was on the chipset and processor inside the handset that is manufactured by Intel. Motorola, later on announced a partnership with Intel for their processors in Droid series.
