Islamabad: (Thursday, January 12, 2012) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani while quelling all rumours of an imminent army – government confrontation has revealed that Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani talked to him on phone
before issuance of a formal ISPR reaction to his statement.
Earlier, the fast paced developments on part of Prime Minister and Army Chief and the consequent day-long political analysis on television channels had stirred rumours of another marshal law. However, now, this latest statement
by the PM has brought the political temperature in the country down.
Speaking to the media reporters today, Gilani said, “We have always stood by the army and we have nothing against anyone”.
Dwelling on his interview to a Chinese newspaper and his deliberations on the replies of Army and ISI chief submitted in memogate case, the Prime Minister insisted that the replies should have been sent through the Ministry of
Defence to the Ministry of Law and Justice and then to the Attorney General of Pakistan instead of their direct submission to the registrar Supreme Court.
He said, “They did not write to the Defence Ministry and bypassed the Ministry of Law and Justice and sent only a copy to the Attorney General. They sent the replies straight to the Registrar.”
He further said that his interview with the Chinese newspaper was pre-scheduled and when the interview was done, General Kayani had already landed in Pakistan.
Quelling the rumours of another marshal law, the Prime Minister said that democracy will continue to function in the country and the Senate elections will be held on time.
The PM highlighted that under trichotomy of powers, a balance among the institutions was essential in the country. He said, ‘The game currently being played was aimed at stopping the Senate polls from taking place.’
