Apparently the objective of the probe commissions is to confuse the already messy situation rather than illuminate. With giving only an impression of hard work, they put aside the investigation.
It happened in the case of Saleem Shahzad, who was gunned down by unknown forces after he published a report about the militant’s infiltration in Pakistan Navy.
The commission, which was constituted with a mandate to probe the killers of the journalist, failed to do so in its final report.
It was asked to submit a report within six weeks but it took half a year to reach the senseless conclusion. Ultimately, we are no closer to truth despite the commission’s report.
In an odd move, the probe commission recommended Rs3 million in compensation to the assassinated journalist’s heirs. However, it failed to get the culprits expose. The commission did not adopt adequate probe-process from the very beginning of the very start.
The cell-phone and e-mail data of Saleem Shahzad was quite crucial for the commission but it faced unexplainable and unreasonable delays in getting access to the said stuff. The data allegedly have been scrubbed by the intelligence agencies.
Following the murder of Shahzad, journalist fraternity and human right activists blamed the security agencies for his killing. The assassinated journalist used to work on alleged ties of military establishment with militants.
In fact, he produced a story, a couple of days ahead of his killing, on penetration of al Qaeda in the Pakistan Naval forces. The report of the commission will work little to dispel the suspicions over the forces.
The commission has also failed in its assignment what it was tasked about. It will sure to have frightening effects on the media professionals after the murder of prominent reporter with no consequences.
What will happen to those who regularly write about the military and security establishment? They may end up in ditch anywhere. The commissions also gave a message to the assassinators that they could move freely and do whatever they like.
Pakistan has been declared as the most risky place in the globe for media professionals. As many as ten journalists were killed in 2011. The commission’s report will add danger to the lives of already hapless masses.
