NRO Beneficiary: Another controversial appointment

Ignoring the already depressing situation, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has appointed Farrakh Ali Shah, currently in NAB’s custody on charges of corruption, as member National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

A notification issued by the PM Secretariat informed Farrakh Ali Shah has been appointed member of the regularity authority following the recommendation from the Punjab Government, a private media outlet reported on Thursday.

As per the rules of NEPRA act, good repute is pre requisite for an official to be nominated as member of the authority.

It seems that the premier did not learn any lesson from the past, as he had to eat the dust on several occasions owing to his controversial steps. Conversely, this time he has come up with an explanation that the appointment was made on the recommendation of the Punjab Government.

Earlier, he had appointed Adnan Khawaja as head of the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) against worthwhile package despite the fact he was only intermediate and no professional education or experience for the post.

The Prime Minister had to remove Khawaja after the Supreme Court directed him to do so.

Late, Gilani also appointed another controversial person Buland Akhtar Rana as Auditor General of Pakistan to which the apex court and the PML-N expressed their dissatisfaction. Rana is considered a close associate to the premier.

The game was not over at this point, as the PM appointed Justice (Retd) Deedar Hussain Shah as the Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which was challenged in the Supreme Court.

The fresh beneficiary, Farrukh Ali Shah is in the custody of National Accountability Bureau. He allegedly involved for misappropriating materials causing Rs4.87 million loss to the national exchequer.

Earlier, an accountability court had handed over Lahore Electrical Supply Company (LESCO) Chief Engineer Farrakh Ali Shah, along with others to NAB on physical remand.

The accused was apprehended in November last on charges of misappropriation of materials causing losses of Rs 48, 70,000 to the national kitty.

The court on January 3 this year had extended 14-day physical remand of Farrakh Ali Shah and his other aides.

It is however, beyond one’s understanding what motivated the Punjab government that keeps criticizing the federal government for making corrupt inductions, to nominate a controversial person to the post.
