Senate body directs police to overcome lawlessness

Expressing concern over the law and order situation in the country, the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights Thursday directed provincial police chiefs to take solid measures to overcome rising incidents of crimes.

Secretary Human Rights Batool Iqbal alleged that police officials were also involved in crimes and were least interested in perform their duties.

The Senate’s body met with Senator Afrasiab Khan Khatak in the chair, at the Parliament House. The committee resented the increasing incidents of street crimes saying that such crimes. It, at the same time, deplored that police were reluctant to take action against criminals and lawbreakers.

The functional panel directed the Ministry of Interior to present the report on Saleem Shahzad murder case.

The body also expressed concerns over threats to Senator Hafiz Rashid by unknown persons, asking the ministry to submit a report after thorough investigation.

The committee also directed the ministry to provide security to Hafiz Rashid and to deploy the Frontier Constabulary personnel at his residence.

During the meeting, Senator Raza Rabbani raised the issue of torture of innocent people and murders in police custody.

In reply to that point, Director Police Bureau said that his department was taking actions to stop this practice in the department.

An official of Sindh police briefing the committee about the murder of three Hindu doctors said it was a rape case and police has arrested seven accused. “Surprise raids are being continued to arrest the other four persons,” they informed.

The committee expressed dissatisfaction over the protection of minorities’ rights in the country, issuing directions to ministry of human rights and concern departments to submit through investigative reports over this issue.

Police officials informed the committee that the media had highlighted the murder of Dr Baqir Shah and it was being linked with Kharotabad incident.

However, the committee was unsatisfied and directed the Home Secretary and Inspector General Balochistan to submit detailed report on the matter.
