Sunil Gavaskar calls for young blood in Team India
Saturday, January 14th, 2012 1:52:31 by Rana Nasir GhafoorIndian batting legend, Sunil Gavaskar has said that the times has come for saying good bye to some senior players and bring in youngsters to take the national side to the next level.
Gavaskar’s comments came in the wake of India’s terrible performance so far on the ongoing tour Down Under. Despite two embarrassing defeats in the opening two Tests, the Indian fans were expecting the experienced players to take responsibility and fish
the team out of the troubled waters.
However, the misery continues, as the Men in Blue are struggling in the third game as well. The Kangaroos are in a commanding position with a handsome lead in the first innings, and the stage is all set for Australia’s another convincing success.
Saddened by India’s ordinary performance, Gavaskar stated that bringing in young blood in the team is the only way forward.
"What India now need to do very, very quickly is to look forward and not backward. If it unfortunately means that we have to say goodbye to some of the players who have served the country for so long and so wonderfully, that we have to do," Gavaskar said
after the team was bundled out for 161 in the first innings at Perth.
"Because, if the team is going to get out for 160-odd it’s better to do with young players so that they can learn from experience and serve the country better in future rather than with those who have been there, seen it and done that but who are not being
able to do it now," added the former cricketer who is following the series as a commentator.
The great batsman, however, elucidated that the selectors cannot afford to make whole sale changes. He explained that the team management needs to instil new guys in the side slowly but surely. Meanwhile, the 62-year-old asked that the authorities not to
remove Mahendra Singh Dhoni from the captaincy, adding that too many changes will dent team’s confidence badly.
"I think the selectors are capable of taking hard decisions and if hard decisions are to be taken for the Indian team they have to take it," he told ‘NDTV’.
