ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan tabled a resolution in the National Assembly, seconding the government, democracy and continuation of democratic process.
According to the resolution, parliament was people’s representative, having believes the present democratic dispensation that is about to complete four years came into being as a result of great sacrifices rendered by the nation.
“This House reiterates the belief of the democratic forces that the future of Pakistan and well-being of its people lies in the continuation and strengthening of democratic institutions and constitutionalism for the resolution of national issues‚ strengthening of the federation and empowering the people of Pakistan,” the resolution added.
According to the draft, the National Assembly reiterates that sovereignty lies with the people of Pakistan and the parliament holds the repository of the collective wisdom of the people. In the concluding remarks, the resolution said it endorsed and supported the efforts made by the political leadership for strengthening democracy.
The House will vote on the resolution on Monday. The government was ready to pass the resolution Friday but on a request of Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani decided to hold further proceedings Monday.
Earlier, Chaudhry Nisar said his party wanted to examine text of the resolution whether they could support it or not.
The prime minister needs 172 votes to retain Parliament’s confidence but this resolution will require the support of half of total MNAs present on the voting day. Currently, there are 325 members in the Lower House while the remaining seats are vacant.
The government will need 163 votes if all the sitting members turn up in the House. PML-Q and ANP will support the resolution. A report in the PML-N claimed that Jameat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) would not second the resolution.
The MQM has said the decision about supporting the resolution would be taken in party meeting on Saturday or Sunday.
Party’s duty parliamentary leader in the NA, Haider Abbas Rizvi said the MQM would support the democracy and the constitution, suggesting the government to avoid confrontation with the state’s institutions.
Information Minister Firdaus Ashiq Awan said the government could have got the resolution passed Friday but it delayed it on a request of the leader of the opposition.
Awan said any amendments if put forward by the opposition would be accommodated in the resolution.
