Saturday, January 14th, 2012 9:56:17 by Faisal FarooqChief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiyani has asked President Asif Zardari to instruct Prime Minister to withdraw his statement to Chinese media about army and ISI chiefs, private TV channel reported on Saturday.
Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiyani called on President on Saturday evening at Aiwan-e-Sadar before going to Prime Minister’s House to attend the meeting of Defence Committee of Cabinet (DCC).
During one-on-one meeting both the top personalities expressed harmony to continue good working relationship between army and civilian leadership.
President Asif Ali Zardari said on the occasion that democratic government would keep national security and sovereignty on top in every circumstance and to catering the needs of armed forces would also be ensured.
During the meeting that lasted more than one and a half hours, issues relating to Prime Minster’s interview to Chinese media and stance of Pak Army on memo gate scandal and overall security situation of the country were discussed in detail.
Gen. Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiyani briefed President Zardari about the professional matters of Pak Army and his recent visit to China.
According to a private TV channel, General Kiyani asked President to instruct Prime Minister to withdraw his statement in which Gilani claimed that army chief and DG ISI violated constitution by sending their replies direct to the Supreme Court in the memogate case instead of adopting a proper channel.
The tussle between army and civilian leadership started a few days back when ISPR issued severe warning to the civilian government in response of the premier’s statement.
In the very next move, Gilani sacked the military-favorite Defence Secretary Khalid Nameed Lodhi, which fueled the already deteriorated relations between the two state organs.
In the present scenario, it seems that the civil-military relations are moving towards normalization.
