To revise ties with the United States, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) proposed a set of recommendations to parliament. As many as 35 recommendations have been finalized after numerous sittings by the parliamentary body.
The body was asked to prepare a set of recommendations to revise Islamabad’s connections with Washington after NATO airstrikes killed 24 Pakistani troops in Salala check posts, in Mohmend Agency, on November 26, 2011.
The panel, in its advisements, finalized the proposal of recommendations by voice vote, and will be dispatched to the Prime Minister in the next phase. The premier will present it in the joint sitting of parliament for debate.
The parliament body took enough time in making the proposal to revise the terms of engagement with America that resumed its spy attacks in Pakistan. It carried out a couple of attacks following a two-month break after the Slala incident.
Now, one can hope that the government will show urgency in debating and adopting the proposal of recommendations set the by the committee.
According to the suggestions, all compacts with NATO and the US will be in writing. The committee also recommended the government to redefine surcharge in terms of NATO supplies while formation of a monitoring mechanism.
The panel also asked the government to take strict note of the drone attacks, linking the issue with future engagement with the NATO forces and the US. It also recommended the incumbent to gracefully draw itself from the war on terror, without ending all the relations with the US.
All we need to impose new strategy is a strong political will. It is quite better than to keep fighting with own people.
By including all the recommendations in the new devised foreign policy, the government should prepare even-footed knots with America. Following the preparations of recommendations, the parliamentary body will probe the infamous memogate scandal.
The parliamentary panel should carry out a free and fair investigation into the matter to reveal the hidden hands in the scam.
The governments clarified that it give the parliamentary body probe priority over the commission formed by the Supreme Court, it should not influence the panel in finding out the right man behind the entire saga.
