The former President of Pakistan Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf has recently stated his stance of being in support of the military of the country in case there is a coup in Pakistan. However, having said that, he also expressed his view that a coup does not
seem likely at present.
The former President of the country Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf expressed himself in the following words while speaking with Karan Thapar on Devil’s Advocate programme on
CNN-IBN : "I don’t think Army intends to take over. The environment is not at all conducive for the Army to take over. I think the Army understands that. I am reasonably sure that army coup will not take place but my support always remains with the
Army. I’ve been an army man and I can never imagine to be against the Army…I am with the Army, I will stand by the Army."
The rumors of a military coup in the country were triggered because of the increasing tensions between the military of Pakistan and the civilian government ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party. The tensions between the two parties reached the point of concern
because of the memo gate scandal that is currently in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The scandal was brought to light by the claims of a Pakistani businessman based in America who cast allegations against the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States. The allegations made against Hussain Haqqani held him responsible for being a party
in passing on an unsigned note to the US asking it for help against the military of Pakistan. The memo indicates that the government of Pakistan feared that a coup would be staged in the country after the death of Osama bin Laden and American support was required
to rein in the military of Pakistan.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan is currently investigating whether the note had originated from someone in the office of the government of the country.
Interestingly, just before the memo gate case was about to commence in the Supreme Court, President Asif Ali Zardari left the country on the basis of ill health.
