Islamabad: (Monday, January 16, 2012) National Assembly here today passed the pro-democracy resolution with majority. The resolution was moved by Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali.
Prior to moving the resolution formally, the PML-N had proposed some amendments into it, which were approved and incorporated and later on read out by Federal Minister Naveed Qamar. One of the amendment stated that the final authority
to rule lied with Allah Almighty.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani congratulated the parliamentarians on successful passage of democracy resolution while MNAs of PML-N and PPP Sherpao staged walk in protest.
Commenting on Supreme Court’s orders to appear before the judges in person, Gilani said that he would appear before the apex court and Chief Justice of Pakistan. He said, “After becoming the Prime Minister my first words were:
Release the judges”.
He said the government did not want to have confrontation with the state institutions including judiciary and that mandate of the elected government should not be degraded. Citing the sacrifices rendered by the PPP leadership,
he said, “We need no certificate to prove our patriotism.”
The PM said he did not need to take vote of confidence from the Assembly.
Commenting on the resolution, the leader of opposition in the house, Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan said that although his party had decided to not to support any resolution, but later on it changed its stance for the sake of national
interest and put forth the amendments after engaging in talks with the government.
Stating that there was no hope from the Pakistan Peoples’ Party to do for the betterment of the people, Nisar said that democracy in the country had no internal or external threat.
