Supreme Court sends contempt notice to Prime Minister

Supreme Court has issued a contempt of court notice against the Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani in the NRO implementation case on Monday.

The Supreme Court has directed Yusuf Raza Gilani to appear before the apex court on Thursday, January 19.

On this regard, Law Minister Maula Bux Chandio said that the government should confer with lawyers and is bound to respect Supreme Court’s notice. He also said that the outcomes of this notice will be in conformity with the law and constitution of Pakistan.

Referring to the Supreme Court’s notice, Chandio told reporters outside SC that, “This is not a small, usual thing”.

“This is a Supreme Court order on which we will consult our committee of experts. We will take the necessary steps in light of the constitution and the law,” he added.

In addition, Fasih Bukhari, the Chairman of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) apologised completely to the court.

On the other hand, the Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq informed Supreme Court that no progress has been made from the side of government on the six points suggested by SC in the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case.

A panel of seven judges of the Supreme Court, chaired by Justice Nasirul Mulk is investigating the NRO execution case.

The Attorney General said he told all related authorities about the Supreme Court’s orders but has not received any reply from them.

However, Justice Mulk told AG to advance with his point of view on the NRO implementation by apex court.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa of the Supreme Court criticised AG for representing the case without receiving any response from the government.

“You should not have arrived today without instructions from the respondents when it was clearly directed in the last hearing,” Justice Saeed said.

Justice Khosa noticed that the government was not taking orders of Supreme Court seriously. Therefore, the judges gave a 15-minute deadline to AG to get a response from the government and when he failed to do so, a contempt of court notice was issued against
the PM by Supreme Court.
