Young British national extradited to America
Monday, January 16th, 2012 12:04:00 by Awais KhanA British court has authorized the extradition of a young British student, Richard O’Dwyer, to the U.S. O’ Dwyer had created a website that allowed sites to link to free viewing of movies and U.S. television series.
The 23-year old is suspected to have won thousands of Euros from advertising on his website, TVShack, before it was closed down by the British authorities. The young student is eligible to be sentenced to imprisonment if found guilty of infringing the copyright
legislation.
U.S. officials opened the case when O’Dwyer was 19. He was arrested for his acts in 2011. His lawyer, Ben Cooper, has argued that the site was limited to redirect surfers to other sites that housed the content.
He emphasized that this practice does not differ from the results offered by Google’s search results. If there is extradition, he will be the first British citizen to whom the measure applies for such offenses.
O’Dwyer lawyer believes that the youth is being used as "guinea pig" by U.S. authorities in enforcement of their laws on intellectual property. The judge’s decision is appealable in London.
Richard O’Dwyer has expressed its disappointment at the ruling. Meanwhile, his mother crying in front of the gathered media and denounced the extradition treaty with the United States, calling it "rotten."
