Yousuf Raza Gilani in contempt

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has recently issued a contempt notice to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani. The notice has been issued to the Prime Minister because he has failed to comply with the orders of the top court in the country

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had repeatedly demanded the Prime Minister to order the reopening of the corruption case in which the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has been charged. However, Yousuf Raza Gilani has not taken such a step.

The President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has been charged with money laundering and a Swiss probe was investigating the charges made against him when the investigation was put to a stop by the National Reconciliation Ordinance that was signed by Bhutto
during the time Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf was President of the country.

However, the NRO was deemed as illegal by the apex court of Pakistan and the pressure to restart the investigation on the current President of Pakistan increased.

As the directive of the Supreme Court has not been complied with by the Prime Minister of the country, the top court has warned that serious actions may be taken against Yousuf Raza Gilani. As the Prime Minister of Pakistan has been placed under the contempt
of the Supreme Court, Yousuf Raza Gilani can be made subject to measures such as prosecution, imprisonment as well as dismissal.

The Federal Law Minister Maula Bakhsh Chandio expressed his views by commenting on the matter in the following words: "This is not a small or an ordinary thing. This is a Supreme Court order."

The government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party is also faced with tensions between itself and the military of the country because of the memo gate scandal that is also under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The memo gate case
indicates that Asif Ali Zardari was involved in delivering a message via the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States asking the country to rein in the military of Pakistan because a coup was feared after the death of Osama bin Laden.
