Contempt notice against PM challenged in apex court

The notice of contempt that was issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan against the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani was recently challenged in the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had issued the notice of contempt to Yousuf Raza Gilani as he had failed to comply with the directives of the Supreme Court asking to get the corruption case filed against the President of Pakistan in the Swiss court to be opened.

The stance taken by the petition that is filed in the apex court is that the Prime Minister of Pakistan has the right to immunity just as the President of Pakistan does. Not only that, the petition also stated that "it is not the job of the Prime Minister
to write letter to Swiss authorities.”

The petition filed in the apex court also lined the steps that the Supreme Court should have taken before calling in the Prime Minister of Pakistan to appear before the Supreme Court. According to the petition, the Law Minister of the Country should have
first been called in followed by the Law Secretary rather than the Prime Minister of Pakistan who is scheduled to appear before the Supreme Court on the January 19th.

The following statement was made by the spokesperson of Yousuf Raza Gilani concerning the matter at hand: "In the meeting, it was agreed that Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan would appear in the Supreme Court of Pakistan along with the Prime Minister as his counsel
on January 19.”

Yousuf Raza Gilani is now expected to appear before the Supreme Court of Pakistan on the coming Thursday. After the Prime Minister of Pakistan was issued the contempt notice, he made a statement that he would explain his reasons for not complying with the
Supreme Court of Pakistan once he appears before it.

It is widely speculated that the Prime Minister of Pakistan may have no reasonable way out of the situation unless he makes an apology before the Supreme Court and as redemption, seek to re open the corruption cases that had been closed against Asif Ali
Zardari under the NRO.
