Islamabad: (Tuesday, January 17, 2012) The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) here today floated a bill in National Assembly (NA) to seek creation of new provinces in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In today’s NA session, chaired by deputy speaker Faisal Karim Kundi, MQM proposed three constitutional amendments with having creation of new provinces at the top of the agenda. The bill, proposing 20th amendment to
the Constitution of Pakistan was tabled by MQM central leader Waseem Akhtar.
As the bill clearly mentions creation of Hazara province, comprised of six KP districts, it also suggests the NA to hold a referendum in 21 districts of South Punjab giving the people a right to decide if they wanted to have one
large Seraiki province or more than one provinces.
Moreover, the bill presented by the MQM also suggested to conduct a referendum in Dera Ismail Khan and Tank districts to decide on whether they would like to remain a part of KP or would like to join the proposed south Punjab province.
While the bill suggests to be approved by NA only, the government did not oppose it and forwarded it to a standing committee for further contemplation.
While talking to the media representatives after the NA session, Haider Abbas Rizvi, one of the central leaders of MQM, said that his party only supported ongoing movement for the creation of Hazra province.
Supporting his argument, he said his party was in favour of creating new provinces on administrative grounds. He said, “The amendment bill would be implemented on all four provinces.”
