Buck (2010) – Review: a film for all ages?
Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 5:00:03 by Musa AfridiIs the story of horse whisperer, Buck Brannaman’s, life and work a fulfilling experience or a waste of everyone’s time?
There are many cinematic masterpieces that a majority of film enthusiasts will never get the chance to see because of the fact that they are indie flicks and will not make the mainstream or because the fact that the ‘documentary’ classification will many
off as well.
One of those films is Buck, which has some magic to it because it enchants viewers from the very beginning and holds them in that spell until the final credits roll. There is not much action apart from an incident relating to a horse and an unsuspecting
trainer, which last less than a split second, yet the story and the way Buck interacts with one of the most majestic animals on the face of planet Earth will hold everyone’s attention.
There are no camera tricks or special effects, just the relationship between man and animal, one based on trust and understanding. While that may not sound like something to use up an hour and a half of one’s time, a few minutes will have you hooked.
Along with showing the Colt clinics, which Buck holds across the country, viewers will also get a look into the main characters troubled youth where he was brutally beaten by his father. That story in itself and how he overcame those odds to become what
he has today are an inspiration in their own right.
Then of course there are the horses themselves. For some odd reason there seems to be a certain fascination that mankind has with the four legged mammal. Whether it is because a horse represents freedom or work ethic, loyalty or grace, seeing the animal
through Buck’s eyes makes them even more endearing.
Verdict: Not many movies are about stories that may appear mundane to the likes of everyday folk, yet Buck is a motion picture experience one has to give a try. Within five minutes it will have the viewer strapped and on a saddle riding
into an unknown world.
