Gilani’s stance on COAS and DG ISI replies flawed: Aitzaz Ahsan

Islamabad: (Wednesday, January 18, 2012) Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan today said that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s stance over Chief of Army Staff and Director General Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) replies to the Supreme Court
was flawed.

The veteran lawyer and a senior politician and lawmaker, Aitzaz, who has also consented to be a council to the Prime Minister in the contempt of court case before the Supreme Court was talking in a television programme.

Sharing his stance over writing letter to Swiss Authorities in NRO case, Aitzaz, who is also a potential candidate for senate elections, said that President Asif Ali Zardari enjoyed immunity in criminal cases in Pakistan as well
as in Switzerland.

He was of the view that it was court’s responsibility not to insist on writing the letter which expected to be dismissed by the Swiss Courts. To him, the grounds on which Switzerland will reject the plea to open case against Zardari
was that he was a president of a state.

Responding to a question, Aitzaz said that it was the court only to decide upon whether the case will be over a letter was written as per the direction of the court.

Commenting on whether the court could declare the PM ineligible, he said the Supreme Court would send its decision to the Speaker National Assembly who will then forward it to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

“The ECP will then make a final decision whether the Prime Minister is guilty or otherwise after holding its own hearing of the case” he maintained.
