Make leagues, save cricket
Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 5:26:19 by Sharjeel AhmadIn recent times, it has been a hot issue of debate on different forums that cricket is dying. The research has been done, the surveys have been conducted, the seminars and conferences have been called and strategies have been made to save the taste of the
cricket and keep this widely played game alive at every cost. Objectively thinking, there is no denying the fact that the viewership of cricket has decreased to a large extent and main reason is age-old pattern of Test matches and ODIs. The viewers have fed
up by this monotony. There have been no change and innovation that can keep the attention of the viewers intact. T20 matches have done a little to improve the taste of cricket but they cannot be the only saviors. There is another thing that can save cricket
and it is “Cricket Leagues”.
Due to their unique and different patterns, the cricket leagues can draw the attention of a large number of viewers around the globe and blow a new sprit in the dead body of cricket. Cricket Leagues are more interesting, thrilling and thriving than the Test
matches and ODIs. They contain diversity and glamour. As the world has turned to be a global village with the arrival of new media and information technologies, the people want to see diversity and variety in everything. The Cricket Leagues bring different
players of different cricket teams and countries at the same place. They also have participants from different fields of life like; showbiz, industry and political figures. It makes the game more interesting and enjoyable for the TV viewers and live spectators
alike.
The experiments of English Premier League, Indian Premier League, Major Premier League and Bangladesh National League have proved to be very successful. These leagues have attracted a large number of viewers and helped a lot in renewing the lost attention
of the game lovers. The cricket leagues have also introduced new trends of the game and given opportunities of the talented players of different countries and teams to come and showcase their talent to the world.
Now the Test matches and the ODIs have nothing interesting for the viewers that can hold their attention and sentiments. They are revolving around same old patterns. Moreover, some malpractices like spot-fixing, match-fixing, gambling etc have scandalized
the cricket and the players. The people are badly sick of these issues and scandals that have now become a norm in the cricket. Due to it, the viewership of the game and the ranking of the players are falling down.
If we want to keep cricket intact, there is no other way except restoring its viewership. Apart from restoring the lost taste and trend of the cricket, the leagues can create harmony and compatibility among different civilizations, cultures and communities
of the world and this thing is the need of the time. In these times when wars, hunger, crises and terrorism have destroyed the peace and relationships of the world, sports diplomacy can be very helpful in correcting everything and bringing the individuals,
societies, civilizations and countries together.
The league culture needs to be promoted irrespective of all types of partialities, biases and prejudices. When the players of different countries, communities, civilizations and religions will play and stay together, they will be able to adopt and promote
the message of peace, intercultural and inter religion harmony that can create a harmonized society free from all types of biases.
