PM Gilani is not guilty of contempt of court, says Aitzaz Ahsan

Aitzaz Ahsan, the lawyer of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has claimed he does not believe that his client is guilty of the contempt of court. Nevertheless, he expressed that Gilani should distort and request Switzerland to reopen established cases against
the President Asif Ali Zardari.

His words clearly state that PM Gilani is likely to step away from the edge of further defiance with the judicial system after he places himself in the Supreme Court on Thursday, January 19.

The Supreme Court issued a contempt of court notice against Gilani, after the government refused to write to Swiss authorities for the reopening of graft cases against the president Zardari.

“Asif Ali Zardari has complete immunity as president. There is no harm in writing a letter to the Swiss authorities. He enjoys immunity in Pakistan and abroad as long as he is president,” Ahsan said.

The relation between judiciary and the government has been facing a constant collision. However, Gilani’s decision to employ Ahsan as his lawyer is considered to be a compromising signal towards the judiciary.

Ahsan is a high ranked leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and an important barrister, who is highly appreciated by the judiciary for compelling the government to restore autonomous judges in March 2009.

Ahsan stressed that the Prime Minister has not committed contempt of court and he did not believe that he will be pleaded guilty.

“I don’t think the prime minister has committed contempt of court by not writing the letter. Through my arguments I will try to convince the court that the prime minister is not guilty of contempt,” he added.

On the other hand, PPP has blamed the judiciary for contravening with its authority and joining together with the army to force an early general election. They have accused judiciary for trying to dethrone the government prior to the completion of its five-year
mandate in 2013.

Moreover, in 2011, a Swiss prosecutor told that it is impossible to reopen a case against President Zardari, as he enjoys full immunity.
