Hostel: Part 3 – Review
Thursday, January 19th, 2012 4:55:54 by Musa AfridiHas the third entree in the Hostel series fixed the damage done by the poor sequel to the original, or is it just another pile of trash?
When the original Hostel movie was released all those years ago, it was a time when mainstream gore was coming to the forefront. Saw and Hostel were the two pioneers of making human torture bearable and entertaining, well at least to some people.
Yet, while Hostel was a trendsetter, Hostel 2 was a disaster of a movie which took the same plot and premise yet took it down a sewer, never to see the light of day again. In short, it was really, really bad.
So one can understand that there was a certain level of scepticism that came with watching the third part. Despite all the negativity surrounding the series, Hostel III was a rather pleasant surprise. It does nothing new that other films have not already
done before, yet it does go back to what made Hostel I such a cult classic.
At the same time, it mixes up the formula as well, with torture sequences that would satisfy even the most sadistic of audiences while at the same time having enough plot and story to keep less avid gore fans interested.
This time round a group of friends go out to Las Vegas for a bachelor trip, and in almost Hangover type style find out that one of them is missing. Sadly, the film does not follow the Hangover formula from then on as the plot thickens, gets cut, dissected,
peeled and sawed off.
The ending itself is a nice touch and without giving too much away, there is a sense of poetic justice, albeit with a healthy dose of sadism.
Verdict: if you enjoyed the first Hostel movie and were devastated by the second, then the third film is one that will surely bring back any fondness you once had for the series. If not, it is still a worthy horror flick and one that no
horror fan should miss out on.
It does nothing new in terms of plot, yet it finds new ways to torture victims in gruesome ways to satisfy the growing bloodlust in the audiences of today.
