Islamabad: (Thursday, January 19, 2012) The prosecutor general of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) here today has assured the Supreme Court that they will not arrest the former attorney general Malik Muhammad Qayyum on his
return to Pakistan. Qayyum has been out of country for medical treatment.
Appearing before the seven-member special bench of Supreme Court headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk over NRO implementation issue, KK Agha, the prosecutor general NAB told that although they had issued warrants to arrest Malik Qayyum,
however, they were ready to allow him to take the time needed for recovery from his illness.
Sharing the reasons for why warrants for former attorney general were issued, Agha said it was because he was not attending the inquiry.
Wasim Sajjad, Malik’s lawyer in the case, said that chairman NAB was moved to issue warrants with threats of removal from his office through court’s order. To which, Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmani said that the case against his client
pertained to misuse of authority.
The bench decided to adjourn the court until February 1.
